Used to soften M3, relieve internal stress, improve machinability, and refine the structure for consistent hardening.
M3 is heated in the proper hardening range, then rapidly cooled (oil, salt bath, or high-pressure gas). This builds base hardness and wear resistance.
Tempering relieves stress, improves dimensional stability, and balances hardness and toughness. For M3, double or triple tempering is common to reduce cracking or distortion risk.
