1.2510 Cold Work Tool Steel(O1 / SKS3)

1.2510 tool steel (O1) is an oil‑hardening cold work tool steel with good wear resistance, stable hardness and easy machinability. It is widely used for blanking and punching dies, cutting tools, gauges and general cold work tooling that require reliable performance and simple heat treatment.

Compared with plain carbon steels, 1.2510 offers:

  • Better wear resistance and higher hardness
  • Good dimensional stability during oil hardening
  • Good toughness for small and medium‑sized dies and tools

This balance of properties makes 1.2510 a practical choice for cost‑effective cold work tools in everyday production.

Cold Work Tool Steel Applications
  • Blanking dies and light‑duty punching dies

  • Simple forming, bending, and embossing tools

  • Knives, shear blades, and cutting tools for general use

  • Gauges, jigs, fixtures, and measuring tools

  • General cold work tools that need easy machining and oil hardening

1.2510 Tool Steel Heat Treatment Process

Annealing

Heat to 780–820°C, then cool slowly in the furnace to about 600°C and air cool. Annealed hardness: ≤230 HB (easy machining).

Quenching

Heat to 800–850°C, hold to equalize, then oil quench. Hardness after quenching & tempering: about 55–58 HRC.

Tempering

Temper at 150–250°C for at least 1 hour to obtain a final hardness of about 58–61 HRC with good toughness.
