High Speed Steel T4 (ASTM A600) is a tungsten molybdenum alloy high speed steel, with good wear resistance, high temperature resistance, suitable for the manufacture of all kinds of precision cutting tools. T4 High-Speed Steel Heat Treatment Process

Best combination of hardness, toughness, wear resistance conditions in T4 HSS is achieved by a multi-part heat treatment process. Heat treatment process includes:

  1. Hardening:

    The T4 steel is tempered by heating to 1260-1290°C followed by oil quenching, air quenching, or bath quenching at 550°C, and exhibits hardness of 63-66 HRC, which is quite hard and can be utilized for high speed cutting and tooling.

  2. Annealing:

    T4 should be annealed after hot working. The steel is raised to 860 °C (maximum heating rate of 220 °C/hour) and soaked at this temperature followed by air cooling slowly in the furnace. Its annealed hardness is under HB255, which is much easier to machine and form.

  3. Tempering:

    T4 steel was tempered at 560–580°C for two cycles (minimum of 2 h each) after hardening. As it’s a little harden at that point, reducing it relatively between 64-65 HRC results in a good tough and wear resistancy well as its cutting ability.
